Springtime Safety Tips
Last week we discussed how to keep your pet safe from fleas and ticks as the weather gets warmer. But pesky parasites are not the only thing a pet parent should be aware of this spring. There are a few safety tips we would like to share to ensure your fur-kid stays healthy, happy and out of harm’s way this spring, even while indoors.
Indoor Safety Precautions
Spring Cleaning
While this is a springtime ritual in most households, it can also bring about multiple hazards for pets. Carefully read all labels to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. Cleaning products can be toxic so be sure all poisonous household items are securely stored and out of your pets reach. Store cleaners, detergents, bleach, disinfectants, and insecticides, cleaning fluid, fertilizers, mothballs, antifreeze and similar agents in cabinets or covered shelving.
Home Improvement
When it is time to re-paint the living room or build new shelves in the kitchen remember not to leave any toxic or dangerous materials such as nails, insulation, power tools, or paint lying around for your curious pets to get their noses in. Try relocating your fur-kid to another room while you work and when finished, look at your home from your pet’s point of view. Check for dangling electrical cords, loose nails, plastic bags or similar tempting items and remove them immediately.
Cats Just Wanna Have Fun!
Many of these tips apply to cats as well. But there is one important thing to remember for all of those indoor kitties out there. Screens! Many pet parents welcome spring weather by opening windows to let the cool breeze in. This is heaven to an indoor cat who can easily jump on a ledge to feel closer to the outdoors but who can also easily fall out of an open window. Make sure you have snug, secure screens placed in any window you might open.
Holiday Dangers
Even with Easter and Passover behind us, we guarantee the candy jars are still jam packed with goodies and that colorful fake Easter grass is still being found on the floors. These yummy treats, especially chocolate, can be toxic to your pet. Keep all candy out of your pet’s reach in cabinets or jars and always be sure to dispose of the wrappers in a garbage bin with a lid to prevent even the most nimble pet from obtaining these treats.
April Showers Bring May Flowers
Many plants in and around your home can be dangerous to your pet. For instance, the pits of apricots and peaches, spinach and tomato vines can make your pet sick, and may even be fatal in large quantities.
Follow these safety tips to guarantee some fun indoors this spring! And after the spring cleaning is finished, we know you and your fur-kid can’t wait to get outside, so stay tuned for Outdoor Safety Tips as well, from your friend’s at Avery’s Pet Styling!
