We hope you enjoyed Wednesday’s Indoor Safety Precautions and are already putting them to good use. But who really wants to stay indoors when the spring weather hits our area? That is why we also compiled a list of outdoor safety tips to share with you so that you can have just as much fun safely outdoors this season with your fur-kids!
Outdoor Safety Precautions
Growing Your Garden
Springtime weather means no more being cooped up inside, which also means more gardening, planting, fertilizing, and weeding. But beware, many popular springtime plants, including Easter lilies, rhododendron and azaleas, are highly toxic to pets and can easily prove fatal if eaten. Fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides are also hazardous for fur-kids. This does not mean you can’t keep a beautiful garden or grow fresh herbs. Just be attentive to the plants and flowers your pet is sniffing around. A full list of toxic and non-toxic plants can be found on the ASPCA’s website, here: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/plants/
Romps! Runs! Walks!
Warmer weather brings the joy of basking in the sun, longer walks, and more trips to the park. But it also gives your pet more chances to wander off. Make sure your dog or cat is micro chipped and is always wearing a collar with identification tags, even if you are simply letting them out in your own backyard. Longer romps, runs, and walks also come with the potential for allergies to bother your pet. Just like humans, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens. If you suspect your pet has allergies or an allergic reaction, do not hesitate to contact your vet.
Keep Cool!
According to Dr. William Fortune, a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University: "Dogs become less efficient at cooling themselves as the humidity rises.” With this in mind always be sure to carry plenty of water with you for your pet to drink on long walks or after exhausting romps in the park. Also, NEVER leave your dog alone in the car on a warm day. Many people don't realize how quickly the temperature can rise inside a car in warm weather. If you have to go somewhere where dogs are not allowed in, then simply DO NOT bring your dog with you.
Keep these simple, easy to remember safety tips in the back of your mind this spring and you are your fur-friend are sure to have an enjoyable season together. Have fun!
